Run! for Android sprints onto Google Play

You never quite know what you’re going to get when a top-tier company like Sony drops a mobile game, as that isn’t their area of expertise. Yesterday, the folks on Android got a game that’s loosely tied into another game that recently rolled out on consoles. Ready to take a jog in Run Sackboy! Run! for Android?
If you own a PlayStation device, you’ve probably played Little Big Planet or know who Sackboy is. Earlier in the month Sony dropped Run Sackboy! Run! for iOS, and yesterday they finally brought it over to Android. It’s an endless runner set in the universe of Little Big Planet, and it’s actually one of the cooler runners we’ve played this year.
Run Sackboy! Run! is as close as you’re going to get to Little Big Planet on your mobile, but it plays just like any endless runner game. You’ll have to guide Sackboy through a gauntlet of various hazards while collecting bubbles and attempting to evade the giant Negativitron. If you’re quick enough you might just make it through all three areas of the game.
As Run Sackboy! Run! is a freemium title, you can expect your fair share of IAP’s. They don’t seem to be necessary to play, but some of the cooler Sackboy costumes are a little expensive. The can buy “bubbles” along with some other swag, but the costumer and power-ups are the main treat. There’s not a ton of content, but more than enough to keep you busy grinding for bubbles.

LG G4 tantalizer features a 4K display

The LG G3 flagship released earlier this year and brought along a Quad HD resolution display for the ride. Some are already focusing on the next version of this phone and wondering what LG could bring to the table, and today we have an LG G4 tantalizer that features a 4K display.
Rishi Ramesh comes up with some notable and interesting concept ideas for upcoming devices, as shown in this recent Samsung Galaxy Note 5 render of his that we shared. Now the designer has turned his attention to the LG G4, with its standout factor being a 4K display. The handset features slight curvature and appears to be bezel-free at the sides with slim bezels to the top and bottom of the front.
It’s a pretty wide-looking handset and the physical buttons on the rear of the phone are less obvious than on the G3. There are also provided specs for this design, which include a 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor, a 5.7-inch display (with 4K resolution), 3GB of RAM, and a choice of 32 or 64GB models for internal storage (expandable via microSD to 128GB).

There will be fewer cryptic symbols on our phones, thanks to new law

Some of the arcane symbols permanently printed on electronic products could become a thing of the past, thanks to a new law that was just signed off by President Obama.

The E-Label Act, which was signed into law just yesterday, allows companies to use software labels, instead of having to physically print them on devices. A report by The Hill stated that the policies this act sets into place would create more space (no pun intended) to work within FCC standards, which makes sense considering how tech continues to become smaller and smaller.

Up until now, manufacturers had to inscribe certain FCC-mandated symbols and identification numbers on every device they sell, either on its outer shell or in a visible place beneath the back cover, for devices with removable backs.

To put it simply, it seems as if ugly stickers and, worse, permanent FCC and other regulatory labels could be a thing of the past.

However, this new law won’t affect regulations from other countries, meaning that symbols like Europe’s CE mark will stick around. And no, this law won’t prevent manufacturers from putting their own logos on devices, like AT&T did with the One (M8) pictured above.

Have these FCC symbols ever bothered you? Or is it just a case of lawmakers wasting time on the wrong issues?

LG G Watch for $99 from Verizon, that’s a 57% discount

The internet is leaking deals this week – so here’s one for the prospective smartwatch owners out there. Verizon is currently selling the original LG G Watch for $99.99, shipping included. Verizon usually lists the smartwatch with a price-tag worth $229.99, so this works out to a 57 percent saving.

The G Watch was LG’s first smartwatch, but it still comes with the full set of Android Wear features. You are able to receive notifications and status updates on your wrist, ask it spoken word questions via Google Now, view directions, and more. The smartwatch is also IP67 rated for water and dust resistance and its 400 mAh battery will keep the watch juiced up for at least a full days’ worth of usage.

The LG G Watch is compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 or above. Verizon has its own compatibility list too, if you want to double check.

If the low price hasn’t convinced you already, you might also want to check out our full review of the LG G Watch. Here’s the link to the offer.

European Parliament votes in favor of Google break-up

A rumor regarding the proposed breakup of Google Inc. by the EU Parliament appeared at the end of last week and seems to have been right on the money. Today, the EU Parliament took a vote Strasbourg, where 384 legislators voted in favor of the controversial initiative, with 174 against and 56 abstentions, despite last-minute objections from the US Congress.

There are two important points to note about this vote however. Firstly, the EU Parliament vote does not do anything to put such a motion into effect. This power remains firmly in the hands of the European Commission, which is the executive body responsible for proposing legislation. Although the vote has no practical effect yet, it is likely to apply additional pressure on the Commission to take a tougher stance against Google.

Secondly, the vote did not specifically mention Google by name and technically could apply to any search engine. Although, as Google has over a 90 percent market share in Europe, any legislation would pretty much be targeted exclusively at the search giant. Here’s the gist of what the vote was all about:

According to the EU Parliament, “the online search market is of particular importance in ensuring competitive conditions within the digital single market” and there is a “need to prevent online companies from abusing dominant positions”.

Therefore, the European Commission should act “to prevent any abuse in the marketing of interlinked services by operators of search engines” and the Parliament recommends “unbundling search engines from other commercial services.”

Many European politicians believe that Google’s dominant market position is a threat to the continent’s digital economy. The argument is that that information and online products cannot be fairly accessed without influence from the US tech giant.

“Many suppliers and providers don’t really have genuine access to consumers because there is market dominance by certain search engines.” Evelyne Gebhardt, Alliance of Socialists and Democrats

However, this sentiment is not shared by all politicians, some from within the EU have warned about increasingly protectionist policies being put through the parliament. Several US senators and congressmen also attempted to intervene by sending out letters which expressed their “great concern” about the proposal.

“We shouldn’t look for a scapegoat to explain our weaknesses,” Michal Boni, EPP lawmaker from Poland

Alongside the search engine vote, the same text also covered the hot topic of net neutrality and another call to remove remaining carrier roaming charges applied throughout the EU.

The EU’s recent digital legislation, including the controversial “right to be forgotten”, is already having an impact on Google’s services, but the pressure towards a breakup is likely to spell new trouble for the search giant in Europe.

What is Rebirth of Fortune 2?

What is Rebirth of Fortune 2?

Rebirth of Fortune 2 is a tactical RPG similar to Final Fantasy Tactics or Vanguard Bandits. It’s has a lot of RPG characteristics but the mechanics play more like a game of chess. It’s currently $2.77 in the Google Play Store with in app purchases.

Much like any other strategy RPG, you play as a group of characters who take to the battle field against a group of bad guys. You must strategically move your characters and attack the bad guys. The graphics are cleverly done 2D and the style of the graphics may very well lend to the notion that this is a Final Fantasy Tactics clone. There are 26 classes you can choose from and the game boasts over 1000 stages although we wouldn’t be surprised if many of those elements were recycled. Regardless, it’s a very long game.

Everything is pretty standard. The mechanics should be familiar to long time fans of the genre and easy to pick up for those who haven’t played games like this before. There are a host of characters and small story lines to play through. About the only thing that may ruin the experience is the stereotypical in-app purchase model as prices can range up to almost $100. We imagine a good number of those are to unlock things that are otherwise difficult to unlock even deep into the game.

Over 1000 stages?!

PROS
  • There is a lot of content in this game including over 1000 stages and 26 character classes.
  • Decent graphics that are on par with some of the best titles in this genre.
  • Familiar game mechanics and game play will make fans of the genre feel right at home and it's not hard to learn for beginners.
CONS
  • Google Play Games achievements and cloud saving would have been nice.
  • A more cohesive story line would have been a nice touch. As it stands, this is like a mix between Final Fantasy Tactics and Angry Birds.
7.5
Overall, this is a solid strategy RPG. The IAPs have the potential to ruin the game but you can play through it without them if you’re persistent and clever. If you’re interested, it’s $2.77 and the button is below.

Put a ring on it: Samsung patent hints at ring-operated smartwatch

[IMG] Galaxy Club

If it first you “don’t succeed“, try and try again. If you still can’t catch a break after your sixth attempt, take Beyonce’s advice and put a ring on it

A new patent application has appeared this week, potentially giving us a glimpse of what might end up being one of Samsung’s upcoming smartwatches. What makes this particular patent so interesting? It shows a round watch operated by a ring around the face.

To be clear, the filing, originally going back to 2013, isn’t for the circular design or for the idea of operating a smartwatch with a rotating ring. The innovation in the patent is displaying a daily agenda on a circular interface divided into “slices”. Rotating the ring is just one of the proposed ways to edit entries from the agenda.

As with all patents, there’s no guarantee that the idea will ever materialize. Regardless if this technology makes it to a product, we already know that circular smartwatch designs are in the works at Samsung – back in August, SamMobile reported that Samsung is working on an answer to the well-received Moto 360 and LG G Watch R, both round designs. Up until now, Samsung has only launched rectangular designs for its Tizen and Android Wear smartwatches.

Rotating rings are nothing new in the conventional watch industry, but up until now smartwatches have been mostly touch-only affairs. The G Watch R has a prominent ring around its screen, but that only serves to protect the screen. Apple is mixing physical and digital controls for its own Watch, which uses a rotating crown as a primary control. It remains to be seen if and how Samsung will take its ring idea to fruition.

LG appoints a new CEO to head up mobile division

LG is a company that has managed to do something in the mobile world that few competitors accomplished. Once looked at as a mere third-rate phonemaker, the company has rose to become a top rated powerhouse that’s been doing all the right things. As shown with their record breaking sales for Android devices last month, LG is serious about mobile, and now it appointed a new CEO to make sure that it stays on the right track.

While one of the first thoughts that came to my mind was “why change bosses if the current one is doing so well?”, the newly appointed mobile leader certainly has the right credentials for the job. Effective January 1, Juno Cho will take the reins as the new CEO of the mobile division, moving on from his current position of president of LG Corporation. Cho is well versed in the mobile industry, having lead LG’s mobile business strategy (along with sales and marketing) for North America between 2000 and 2007.

The current CEO Jong-seok Park of LG Mobile will shift to the role of Chief Technology Advisor, and considering how well he has done while at the helm, one can only hope that his influence will remain strong.

LG also announced changes to their upper management structure across multiple divisions, and seems very serious on maintaining momentum.

LG has worked very hard to completely turn its mobile division around, and its success has been a nightmare for other Android manufacturers. Though other factors are at play, Samsung has undoubtedly felt the sting, with its numbers taking a huge dive while LG sales projections continue to soar.

With the huge success of the LG G3, it’s safe to assume that the tech world will have its eyes and ears open on news of LG’s next flagship.

Samsung might bring theme support to TouchWiz

Themes in Samsung TouchWizWhile some of the Android smartphone vendors have been supporting themes as a part of their own customisations for a long time, Samsung has never been one of them, but it could change soon.
A set of screenshots and device images have appeared online, which show the existence of themes in a pre-release version of Samsung TouchWiz user interface. No specifics are known at this point but as we can see in the screenshots, the company will include one or two themes by default and the users will be able to download more, most likely from Galaxy Apps store.
It is important to note here that smartphone manufacturer tend to test a lot of stuff, but not all of it makes it to the final software or devices, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see theme support in the next version of TouchWiz.

HTC’s upcoming mid-range smartphone Desire 620 leaked online

HTC Desire 620HTC is reportedly preparing a successor to its Desire 610 smartphone in the form of Desire 620. The smartphone was first spotted at Taiwan’s telecom regulator NCC and has now appeared in full “hands on” report by a Bulgarian blog Nixanbal (the report has been deleted for some unknown reason, however it still can be seen in Google Cache).
According to the Nixanbal, the smartphone will feature a 5-inch 720p HD display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 64-bit quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.4.4. The Desire 620 will also come with 8MP rear camera with LED flash, 5MP front camera, 8GB of on-board storage, microSD card slot and 2100 mAh battery.
In addition, the smartphone sports front-facing speakers and a plastic body. As you can see, overall there are only marginal improvements in the Desire 620 over 610, nothing major, probably in a quick effort to make it ready for 2015.
The new smartphone is said to be coming to Europe in January and will retail around 255 euros. There is no word on the release in other continents but we hope to hear more at the time of the official announcement.
